How come many people out there feel one meter tall? Myself included. What I feel about me keeps me small. Inside I cringe and feel I am still 4 or 5. A real case of Imposter’s Syndrome. I have micro-confidence, how did I get qualified? Amazingly no-one else makes negative comments, it is only me who criticizses me. Father said when I was 5, “you are stupid”. His ‘joke’ still rings in my head, decades later and despite numerous achievements it is still the message I am hearing; not: ‘A’ for the Art, well done for completing, wow your work’s printed. My ears are still ringing, I’m tense in my tummy, my muscles hold on, aspirations turn to perspirations. Why can’t I let a new message in? Try “You are no longer 5, today you are an adult. Self-criticism doesn’t help, try and take a small risk: Inhale slowly and dare start believing, make a new mantra ‘I AM good enough, doubt is normal’. The majority of us build a set of coping mechanisms throughout our lives that can help us to face life’s challenges as they arise. Common coping methods include meditation, reaching out to some self-help literature or taking up a regular fitness regime. We also each have friends and family on whom we can count for love and support. Yet, with all these good intentions, it is difficult for friends to be unbiased or to tell us things they fear may hurt us. Nor are they able to understand all that they see and hear in us.
Psychotherapy is often referred to as 'talking treatment' as it is usually based on creating a regular time and space for an individual to talk about his problems, explore difficult feelings and work towards solutions with a trained professional. Other forms of therapy may include a variety of communication methods, such as writing, music or artwork.
